| Additional information |
Niue has operated as a prolific licensing hub for commemorative silver since the 1990s, contracting its sovereign issuing authority to foreign mints and distributors — meaning most "Niue" coins are designed, struck, and sold with no meaningful connection to the island's 1,600 residents. This piece is part of that machinery. The Van Gogh painting reproduced on it was completed in Arles in September 1888, during the same fevered two-month stretch that produced over a dozen major works before his breakdown and the confrontation with Gauguin.
