Black Manta is DC Comics' most persistent Aquaman antagonist, and this is one of dozens of licensed superhero bullion-adjacent pieces Niue has issued under a long-running agreement with DC and Marvel that dates back to the early 2010s. Niue's arrangement is straightforward: the island nation of roughly 1,600 people provides legal tender status in exchange for a royalty structure, while the actual minting is contracted out — in most cases to the New Zealand Mint.
Charles III's accession following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022 means this is among the earlier Niue issues to carry his effigy.
