| Aanvullende informatie |
Shaggy Ridge was a fortified Japanese position in the Finisterre Range of Papua New Guinea, taken by Australian forces in a grueling campaign between November 1943 and January 1944. The terrain was so severe — near-vertical kunai grass ridges at altitude — that supply lines depended almost entirely on native carriers and air drops. The fighting is considered one of the most physically punishing of the entire Pacific War.
Niue has issued commemorative pieces under Royal Australian Mint licensing arrangements for decades, and Pacific theater subjects are a recurring theme. KM#6805 is among the heavier issues in this format at 110 g, achieved through a large copper-nickel planchet rather than a precious metal content that would justify the weight independently.
