The New Zealand Mint operates as a private refinery and mint in Auckland with no affiliation to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand — it issues legal tender coins under licensing arrangements with small Pacific and Caribbean sovereign states, in this case Niue, whose government lends its authority in exchange for a portion of revenues. Judge's 2022 season, which produced 62 home runs to break Roger Maris's American League record set in 1961, is the event this coin commemorates. The AL record had stood for 61 years before that September night in Texas.
