Canada's bimetallic toonie format dates to 1996, when the Royal Canadian Mint introduced it partly to frustrate counterfeiting and partly to replace the short-lived two-dollar note discontinued in 1996. This 2023–2024 issue marks the transition from Elizabeth II to Charles III following her death in September 2022 — the first change to Canadian coinage obverse portraits in seventy years. The Royal Canadian Mint moved quickly; Charles III effigy coins entered circulation before many Commonwealth mints had finalized their own portrait approvals.
