The Royal Australian Mint introduced Charles III's effigy on circulating coinage following the accession portrait approved by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee in 2023 — the first change to the obverse of Australian circulation coinage since Elizabeth II's final portrait was adopted in 1998. The eastern grey wallaby reverse on the two-dollar coin dates to the denomination's 1988 launch, designed by Stuart Devlin, who also created the reverses for the original decimal coin series introduced in 1966.
