The king is depicted with a bare head, naturalistically detailed hair, and a draped collar, conveying a restrained and contemporary regal style. The Wedge-tailed Eagle series from Perth Mint has run in various formats since 2014, but the ultra high relief execution presents a specific production challenge: achieving full, sharp detail across steeply inclined relief planes requires multiple strikes at elevated pressure, and even then, edge-to-field transitions on gilded surfaces can obscure fine die detail under the applied gold layer. Rose gold gilding — a copper-gold alloy application — was adopted by Perth in part for its visual contrast against the .9999 fine silver field, which polishes to a noticeably warmer tone than standard .999 blanks.
Charles III's first portrait as issuing authority on Australian coinage dates to 2023 following the accession.
