Zimbabwe's bond coins were introduced in 2014 as a workaround for the country's chronic small-change shortage under its multi-currency system, which had officially abandoned the Zimbabwean dollar in 2009. The Reserve Bank pegged them 1:1 to the US dollar — a parity the market never fully accepted. By 2018, bond coins and the companion bond notes were already trading at a discount on the parallel market, a gap that widened dramatically after November 2017 when Mnangagwa replaced Mugabe and foreign currency shortages deepened.
The denomination was formally absorbed into the RTGS dollar system in February 2019, rendering the 1:1 peg officially obsolete within months of this coin's issue.
