This fractional issue piggybacks on the Krugerrand's 1967 South African debut — the first bullion coin in the world designed for private ownership rather than monetary circulation. Niue's legal tender framework has made it a favored issuing authority for novelty bullion pieces, contributing essentially no coins to actual commerce. At 0.31 grams, the gold content is negligible by any bullion standard.
