Singapore's independence in 1965 was itself an involuntary act — the city-state was expelled from the Malaysian Federation rather than choosing separation — which lends an unusual ambivalence to its annual National Day commemoratives. By the 42nd anniversary, the Monetary Authority had already issued enough August 9th silver pieces to form a substantial series, with collector fatigue a documented concern among Singapore dealers by the mid-2000s.
