Keatinge & Ball relocated from Richmond to Columbia, South Carolina, in 1862 after Union pressure on the Virginia capital made continued operations there precarious. The firm became the Confederacy's most prolific note printer during the war's middle years, working under chronic shortages of ink, quality paper, and skilled labor — all of which show up, with some regularity, in the unevenness of impressions across this series.
The $2 denomination was among the least useful in everyday Confederate commerce, where inflation steadily pushed transaction values upward and small-denomination notes piled up faster than they could be spent. By 1864, a $2 note bought roughly what a few cents had in 1860.
