| Obverse description | Printed in black on white cotton paper, the obverse bears the bank title THE UNION BANK in large script lettering across the centre with MONTREAL beneath, and the heading LOWER CANADA at the top. A central allegorical vignette presents a seated classical figure with agricultural implements, flanked at left and right by large numeral 2 counters set within ornate guilloche frames, with a further vignette of a reclining female figure at upper right. The promise clause renders the denomination as Two Dollars, with a manuscript date of May 1, 1838, and manuscript signatures of the Cashier and President at the foot. |
