São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal in July 1975, and this 1977 issue was struck as part of an FAO-sponsored series promoting agricultural self-sufficiency across newly independent nations. The FAO program deliberately targeted states like São Tomé — a former plantation economy built almost entirely on cocoa — where food production diversification was a stated development priority in the immediate post-independence years.
