The flan is irregular, characteristic of the hammered technique employed at the Seville mint during the late fifteenth century. |

The dexter shield bears the quartered arms of Castile and Leon, while the sinister shield displays the quartered arms of Aragon and Sicily, together representing the united crowns of the Catholic Monarchs. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, and the surrounding Gothic Latin legend reads SUB UMBRA ALARUM TVARUM PROTEGE NOS, a devotional invocation meaning 'Protect us under the shadow of Thy wings.'
