Additional information

ISIS began issuing physical coinage in 2015 as a deliberate ideological act — rejecting fiat currency as a Western construct and framing a return to metallic money as religious obligation under their interpretation of Islamic law. The silver dirham denomination was explicitly modeled on early Umayyad weight standards. Production is believed to have occurred within territory held in Iraq or Syria, though no mint facility has been formally identified.

These pieces saw minimal actual circulation. Their primary function was propagandistic.
