Andorra began issuing its own coinage only in 1983, having relied on French and Spanish currency for centuries despite never formally adopting either as legal tender by treaty. The 1984 brown bear issue was among the earliest pieces in that inaugural series, produced at the Casa de la Moneda in Madrid. The bear depicted was not merely symbolic — a small population of Pyrenean brown bears still ranged across Andorran territory at the time, though the subspecies was already in severe decline and would effectively disappear from the region within two decades.
