The Jalayirid Sultanate under Sultan Husayn I occupied an increasingly precarious position during precisely these years — pressure from the Muzaffarids to the south and the looming threat of Timurid expansion made the 1370s a period of constant military and fiscal strain. The Sultaniya mint, originally established under the Ilkhanids as a major production center in northwestern Iran, continued operating under successive successor dynasties largely through institutional inertia.
Husayn I was killed in 1382, the year this issue's production window closes.
