Kuwait's 15th National Day fell on June 19, 1976, marking fifteen years since the 1961 declaration of independence from British protection — an arrangement that had governed the emirate since 1899. Sabah III, who had ruled since 1965, oversaw a period of extraordinary oil revenue expansion following the 1973 embargo, and commemorative issues from this era reflect the state's deliberate investment in institutional prestige, including a nascent numismatic program through the Central Bank.
