Issued for the International Year of Disabled Persons, a UN initiative that prompted dozens of countries to strike commemorative silver pieces in 1981 — many using the same 28.28g/.925 specification now familiar from Commonwealth crown-sized issues. South Yemen's participation is notable given the country's limited commemorative output; KM#12 is one of only a handful of silver issues the PDRY produced before unification with the north in 1990.
