The 1931 Iranian bronze issues were part of Reza Shah's sweeping monetary modernization program, which had formally replaced the old qajar-era monetary system just years earlier. The dīnār itself was a fractional unit so small in purchasing power by this point that these coins circulated primarily as small change in bazaar transactions — and briefly at that, as rampant inflation during the 1930s rendered low-denomination bronzes increasingly irrelevant.
