Obverse description Right-facing portrait bust of Theodor Heuss (1884–1963), first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail. The legend arcs along the upper periphery reading 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND', with the commemorative dates '1949 - 1969' flanking the lower field. The effigy occupies the central field in a bold, classical style consistent with official German coinage of the postwar era.
