Obverse description Right-facing bust of Theodor Heuss (1884–1963), first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, rendered in high relief with a naturalistic portrait style by engraver Karl Ulrich Nuss. The effigy occupies the central field, with the curved legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND flanking the portrait along the upper rim. The dates 1949–1969, marking his presidential tenure, appear below the bust divided by a central stop.
