Adenauer died in April 1967, and this commemorative circulation issue followed two years later — a relatively swift official tribute for a federal republic still cautious about personality cults. The design was politically deliberate: honoring the Chancellor credited with anchoring West Germany in NATO and the European Economic Community gave the coin an ideological function beyond face value.
