Adenauer died in April 1967, and this commemorative circulation issue followed two years later — a relatively swift official tribute for a federal republic still cautious about personality cults. The design was politically deliberate: honoring the Chancellor credited with anchoring West Germany in NATO and the European Economic Community gave the coin an ideological function beyond face value.
The series ran through 1987 across multiple mint facilities, with pieces struck at Berlin (F), Karlsruhe (G), Hamburg (J), Munich (D), and Stuttgart (F) — minor premium differences between mint marks persist among collectors of the type.
