Obverse description Crude crowned bust of Charles I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) facing right, rendered in low relief in the hammered style typical of early sixteenth-century Iberian provincial coinage. The effigy occupies the central field and is poorly defined due to the rudimentary die-cutting and striking technique. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading ✠ CAROL9 : D : G : I : E : R, abbreviating Carolus Dei Gratia Imperator et Rex. The flan is irregular in shape with areas of weak strike and surface corrosion consistent with its copper composition and age.
