| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in teal and yellow-gold tones on a fine guilloche underprint. At upper centre, the issuing authority's name appears in two lines above a central vignette of ethnic minority women carrying loads along a rural path, with other figures working in the background amid tropical vegetation. The denomination numeral "2" appears within an ornate cartouche at left, with a matching numeral at lower right, and the note is framed by an intricate decorative border with foliate and geometric motifs at each corner. The denomination legend "HAI ĐỒNG" is set in bold letterpress across the lower margin. |

The National Liberation Front's 1968 currency series was prepared in anticipation of a political outcome that never materialized — a liberated southern administration capable of issuing its own money independently of Hanoi. These notes were never released into circulation. The series is sometimes attributed to printing in East Germany or China, though neither attribution has been conclusively documented, and the NLF left almost no paper trail on the production logistics.
Unissued survivors reached the West primarily through military and diplomatic channels after 1975. Pick R5 is among the scarcer denominations in the series.
