Brazil's shift to aluminum coinage in the late 1950s was driven by chronic inflation eroding the metal value of older cupro-nickel issues. The cruzeiro itself had been introduced in 1942 to replace the milréis at par, but by the time this aluminum series entered circulation, inflation under the Kubitschek government — fueled heavily by the construction of Brasília — was accelerating fast enough that the coin's face value was already in retreat against daily commerce.
