A quatrefoil ornament appears at each side of the shield in the field. The striking is characteristic of hammered coinage, resulting in a slightly irregular flan. |

The surrounding circular legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES is rendered in Roman capitals within a beaded border, referencing the Constantinian motto. The composition is simple and heraldic in character, typical of Portuguese hammered gold coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. |
