Obverse description Crowned Portuguese royal arms at center, the shield displaying the five quinas arranged in saltire with bezants, all beneath an ornate crown. A quatrefoil ornament appears at each side of the shield in the field. The circular legend reads GIOANNES IIII D G REX PORTV, distributed around the periphery in Roman capitals within a beaded border. The striking is characteristic of hammered coinage, resulting in a slightly irregular flan.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description A bold cross pattée divides the field into four quarters, within each of which appears one digit of the date 1642, arranged so as to be read sequentially around the cross. The surrounding circular legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES is rendered in Roman capitals within a beaded border, referencing the Constantinian motto. The composition is simple and heraldic in character, typical of Portuguese hammered gold coinage of the mid-seventeenth century.
