The Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres bears the names of 54,896 British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in the Salient who have no known grave. It was inaugurated in 1927, and the Last Post has been sounded beneath its arches every evening since — interrupted only during the German occupation of 1940–1944, when the ceremony continued instead in Brookwood, England.
