Fiume's status between 1919 and 1924 was genuinely anomalous — seized by D'Annunzio's legionaries in September 1919, rejected by both Italy and Yugoslavia, and briefly constituted as the independent Italian Regency of Carnaro. When D'Annunzio was ousted in the "Bloody Christmas" of December 1920, the city entered a chaotic interregnum before the Free State of Fiume was formally established. This note was issued by the municipality — the Città di Fiume — precisely during that period of jurisdictional limbo, when no national authority could issue currency and local scrip filled the gap.
The Corone denomination ties the note to the old Austro-Hungarian monetary system, still in practical use across the former imperial territories long after Vienna's collapse.
