The East Hupeh Worker's and Farmer's Bank was one of several soviet-area financial institutions established by the Chinese Communist Party in the early 1930s to support military operations and local administration in the Hubei base areas. These notes functioned within a tightly controlled regional economy — accepted for grain, taxes, and wages within CCP-held territory, but worthless outside it by design, partly to prevent capital flight and partly because Nationalist forces would not honor them.
Survival rates are low. Soviet-area notes were routinely destroyed during Nationalist pacification campaigns, and many were simply abandoned when the Red Army withdrew during the Long March in 1934.
