Additional information

Liberia's 1847 coinage was produced at the suggestion of the American Colonization Society, which had administered the colony before independence was declared that same year. The Philadelphia Mint struck the official circulation issues in copper, but a small number of trial pieces — including this lead striking — were produced during the approval process before final compositions were confirmed. Lead patterns from this series are exceptionally rare; most were never intended to leave the mint.
