The Organisation of African Unity held its sixteenth summit in Monrovia in July 1979, and Liberia issued this piece to mark the occasion. It was an unusual move — the OAU summit had no established tradition of host-nation commemorative coinage, making this one of the few instances where a member state converted a routine low-denomination circulation type specifically to mark the meeting.
