Australia's 2-cent coin was discontinued in 1992 when the Royal Australian Mint ceased production of both 1- and 2-cent denominations following a government review that concluded the coins cost more to produce than their face value. The final years of issue, covered by this third-portrait series, saw mintages drop sharply as the writing was already on the wall. Surviving uncirculated examples from the late run are more common in collector sets than in change-worn grades, simply because few people spent them once hoarding began.
