The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank replaced the East Caribbean Currency Authority in 1983, taking over monetary operations for eight island states that had previously maintained separate colonial coinages. The 1981 date on this series predates the ECCB's formal establishment — those earliest pieces were issued under transitional arrangements while the new institution was being constituted. The aluminium composition was a deliberate low-cost choice for the smallest denominations, keeping production economics viable for a currency zone serving a combined population of under half a million.
