Additional information

Fiji's coinage underwent a significant transition when the country gained independence in 1970, but the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra continued striking these pieces throughout the series — a practical arrangement reflecting both geographic proximity and the absence of a domestic mint. The 1969 issues predate independence and were struck under British colonial authority; post-1970 pieces carry the same design but represent an independent nation's currency.

The second portrait by Arnold Machin, adopted across Commonwealth coinage from 1968, replaced Gillick's earlier effigy with little fanfare in Fiji specifically.
