Paraguay in 1868 was in the final, catastrophic phase of the War of the Triple Alliance — the country's economy obliterated, its male population decimated, its minting infrastructure essentially nonexistent. This pattern was almost certainly produced abroad, most likely in London or Paris, as part of exploratory post-war monetary planning that never materialized into circulation coinage. The brass composition itself signals experimental intent; Paraguay's issued coinage of the period used copper.
The Pn21 attribution places it among a small group of 1868 patterns that collectors rarely encounter outside major auction houses.
