| Aanvullende informatie |
Westphalia was a Napoleonic invention — carved out of Prussian, Hanoverian, and Hessian territories in 1807 and handed to Jérôme Bonaparte, Napoleon's youngest brother, as a model constitutional monarchy intended to demonstrate French-style governance to the German states. The kingdom lasted only seven years before collapsing under the weight of war indemnities, Jérôme's extravagance, and the 1813 German campaign. Coinage in French decimal denominations was a deliberate administrative imposition, forcing a metricated system onto a region accustomed to a fractured patchwork of German monetary units.
The kingdom's copper issues of 1808 were among its first circulating coins.
