| Beschrijving keerzijde | The large Arabic numeral '2' dominates the central field, flanked above by the dual date: the Gregorian year 1964 to the left and the Hijri year 1383 in Eastern Arabic numerals to the right. Below the numeral, the denomination 'سنتمان' (Centimes) is inscribed in Arabic script. The entire design is enclosed within an ornate scalloped or lobed geometric border in the traditional Islamic decorative style, set within a plain outer rim. |

Algeria's 1964 coinage series was issued in the immediate aftermath of independence, with the Banque Centrale d'Algérie established in January 1963 to replace the franc zone infrastructure that had governed the country's monetary system under French administration. The 2 centimes belonged to a complete new decimal series introduced that year — the first coinage struck entirely under Algerian authority.
Aluminium issues from this series saw limited practical use; the centime denominations were effectively obsolete almost from introduction as inflation eroded their purchasing power through the late 1960s.
