A small ornamental stop or floral device appears at the base, below the inner circle. The design is austere and functional, characteristic of provisional government issues of the Risorgimento period. |

The Provisional Government of Tuscany was established in April 1859 after Grand Duke Leopold II fled Florence under pressure from pro-unification uprisings timed to coincide with the Franco-Piedmontese war against Austria. This coinage was struck during that interregnum period — before Tuscany formally voted for annexation to Piedmont-Sardinia in March 1860 — making it one of the few issues to name Victor Emmanuel II as a prospective sovereign over a territory he did not yet legally govern.
The series had an extremely short window of official use, under a year in circulation before Tuscany ceased to exist as a separate political entity.
