Reverse description The reverse presents a plain, unadorned field within a beaded inner circle, bearing the large numeral '2' above the denomination CENTESIMI in bold Roman capitals, with the date 1859 below, all centrally arranged in three lines. The circumferential legend GOVERNO DELLA TOSCANA (Government of Tuscany) arcs around the upper portion of the coin between the beaded border and the inner circle. A small ornamental stop or floral device appears at the base, below the inner circle. The design is austere and functional, characteristic of provisional government issues of the Risorgimento period.

Additional information

The Provisional Government of Tuscany was established in April 1859 after Grand Duke Leopold II fled Florence under pressure from pro-unification uprisings timed to coincide with the Franco-Piedmontese war against Austria. This coinage was struck during that interregnum period — before Tuscany formally voted for annexation to Piedmont-Sardinia in March 1860 — making it one of the few issues to name Victor Emmanuel II as a prospective sovereign over a territory he did not yet legally govern.

The series had an extremely short window of official use, under a year in circulation before Tuscany ceased to exist as a separate political entity.
