Antioquia's attempts at regional coinage in the late nineteenth century stem from chronic shortages of small denomination currency in Colombia's interior provinces, where federal supply was consistently inadequate for local commerce. This 1890 copper pattern was never authorized for circulation — it remained a proposal, almost certainly produced in limited quantities to demonstrate viability to authorities who ultimately declined to act on it.
The X# prefix in Krause's pattern listings confirms its unofficial status. KM#Pn29a suggests at least one variant exists in the series, likely differing in metal or weight.
