| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Dominican Republic coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting crossed flags and a Bible surmounted by a cross, flanked by a laurel branch to the left and a palm branch to the right, tied at the base. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The legend REPUBLICA DOMINICANA arcs along the upper periphery, with a small five-pointed star positioned at the base below the inner beading. The overall execution is crisp and characteristic of a proof essai strike. |

The Dominican Republic's 1877 essai coinage was produced in Paris as part of a broader push to establish a formal national currency system, decades after independence from Haiti in 1844. Essai strikes of this period were typically produced by the Monnaie de Paris for government approval before authorizing full production runs — in this case, no regular-issue 2 centavos in bronze followed for this date, making the essai the only surviving documentation of the proposal.
