Venezuela's 1863 coinage program was part of the broader monetary reorganization following the Federal War — a five-year civil conflict that ended that same year and left the country's finances in disarray. The new republican government sought to establish a rational decimal coinage system, and essais like this copper piece were submitted as trial strikes to evaluate proposed designs and specifications before committing to full production.
KM#E2 was never adopted for circulation. The 2 centavos denomination itself went through several iterations before Venezuela settled on its eventual coinage under the 1873 monetary law.
