Brazil's 1967 monetary reform introduced the cruzeiro novo, revaluing the old cruzeiro at 1,000-to-1 in an attempt to stabilize an economy that had suffered chronic inflation through the late 1950s and 1960s. These small-denomination coins were among the first issued under the military government's restructured monetary framework. The two KM varieties reflect a mid-series die modification — collectors distinguish them primarily by the style of the numeral and font details rather than any change in issuing authority or metal.
