Honduras struck these copper 2 centavos pieces during a period of considerable monetary instability — the country had abandoned the old peso system in favor of the lempira framework that was still being formalized, leaving small denomination coinage in an awkward transitional position. Demand for low-value copper was driven largely by the banana plantation economy, where United Fruit and Cuyamel Fruit company workers needed small change for company store transactions.
