The Greater Republic of Central America was a short-lived federal union of Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua that existed from 1896 to 1898 — making an 1889 date on this piece almost certainly a pattern or essai struck in anticipation of the union rather than a circulation issue. The X# prefix in the KM reference system confirms this: it designates non-circulating or pattern status. The federation collapsed before a unified coinage ever reached general circulation.
