Lithuania declared the restoration of independence in March 1990, but Soviet economic structures remained largely intact for over a year. These aluminum cents were struck in 1991 as part of the first post-Soviet coinage series, before the litas was formally reintroduced as the national currency in 1993. The interim period meant these coins circulated alongside Soviet rubles in an awkward monetary overlap.
