| Descrição do anverso | Cast iron cash coin of standard round form with a central square perforation. The four-character reign title legend 元佑通寶 (Yuanyou Tongbao) is arranged in running script (xingshu) in the four quadrants surrounding the square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional Chinese manner. The characters are boldly rendered with the fluid, slightly cursive strokes characteristic of xingshu calligraphy. The coin displays a raised inner rim framing the central perforation and a raised outer rim enclosing the field, both cast in the typical Northern Song fashion. The surface exhibits an aged iron patina with areas of rust and oxidation consistent with the iron composition. |

Yuanyou Tongbao was issued under Emperor Zhezong during the regency of Empress Dowager Gao, a period defined by the systematic dismantling of Wang Anshi's New Policies. The running-script version reflects the calligraphic fashions of the Northern Song court, where reign title coins were routinely cast in multiple script styles simultaneously — seal, running, and regular — as deliberate aesthetic choices rather than sequential issues.
Iron cash of this type served regional economies where copper was too scarce or too valuable to circulate freely. The 1093–1094 window is narrow; Empress Gao died in 1093 and Zhezong immediately reversed course, reinstating the New Policies she had suppressed.
